The blossoms of the Prickly Pear cactus are delicate and fade quickly in the
desert heat.
At left, a bee drinks deeply of the blossom's nectar.
We call them jumping cactuses because if you go near one, you'll
find it stuck on your sock. Or worse, in your leg. It's still more painful
if you try to pull them out and get the hooked barbs in your fingers.
