All that changed with the wildfires of 2003.  The forest floor was dry as matchsticks and when a careless motorist emptied his ashtray along the road, that's all it took for this fire to race up Strawberry Hill like a bomb.



The fires generated their own weather, sending branch-lit torches high in the air ahead of the fire and even across the North Thompson river.

A year before the wildfires, I walked through the Arrowroot flowers, trees and bushes, that covered the hillside near our house.
